NOTICE TO NEW BIDDERS
Oor Mai! Auction Sales Are Conducted in the Following
1. Bids are entered in the order received; if identical bids are received, the first bidder is awarded the lot. SEND BIDS AIRMAIL — IT PAYS.
2. The highest bidder on the date of the sale is awarded the coin at a slight advance over the second highest bidder. Bids you send in are the maximum you are willing t® pay for the coin. WE, AS YOUR AGENT, TRY TO BUY THE COIN AS LOW AS THE NEXT HIGHEST BID WILL ALLOW.
3. Valuations placed in the auction catalog are catalog price , prices gen- erally asked by dealers when the coin is in stock, or prices generally realized at auctions.
ANY COIN WHICH IS NOT AS REPRESENTED MAY BE RETURNED WITH- IN FIvE DAYS FROM DATE OF RECEIPT FOR FULL REFUND. YOU TO BE THE SOLE JUDGE AS TO CONDITION. YOU MUST BE SATISFIED. No, you
won't receive a nasty letter for returning a coin — instead you will receive a letter thanking you for calling attention to the error made in cataloging. While we try to describe coins as accurately as possible, it is inevitable that an occasional erior is made in the cataloging of thou.ands of coins each month. Whenever this happens, we want it called to our attention to help prevent future errors.
The coins will be on display the day of the sale at our offices and can be seen by appointment any day prior to the sale.
If you are not interested in these sales, won't you advise us so we may dis- continue sending you catalogs.

HOLLINBECK’S — Still America's Leading Coin Auctioneers
IS THIS YOUR FIRST AUCTION CATALOG?
14th EDITION GUIDE BOOK AND 18th EDITION STANDARD CATALOG
USED IN CATALOGING THIS SALE
Scarce gold, rolls, proof sets, small cents, proof gold and currency seem to be rising the most rapidly at present with most bringing close to listed values and a great number bringing even more. Many are rising from month to month with a number "just not obtainable." The coins most in demand will have the greatest , number of bidders and with the law of supply and demand working, these coins keep setting new records.
Occassionally a collector writes us asking why our estimated values in some instances are higher than the catalog listing. This occurs when the demand is so great and the supply so small that new records are set whenever these coins come upon the market. If one will take a few moments to reflect, he will understand that it takes several months to compile the necessary information before the catalog can be published, therefore, it is inevitable that the catalog listing will be under the prevailing market price on the items in popular de- mand at the time of the publication. The estimated prices are entered only after careful examination of the results in our past sales which reflect the actual and not theoretical value. (PLEASE NOTE THAT MANY OF THE ESTIMATES ARE CATALOG VALUE ONLY. MANY OF THE GOLD COINS, SILVER $1, WASHINGTON QUARTERS, ETC. ARE ESTIMATED AT CATALOG.) in the final analysis, you the collector, are the one who sets the price.
BIDS ARE RECORDED AS FOLLOWS: Each bid sheet is given a number as it comes in, and the bids are recorded. In the event of identical bids, the first bidder receives the lot. At the last day of the sale, the books are closed with the highest bidder on each lot being awarded the lot at an advance of not over 5% above the next highest bidder. For illustration — the two highest bids received on a lot may be $17 and $20. The highest bidder who bid $20 would receive the lot at $17.25. We act as your agent and use your bids as a limit — not as a final bid unless we are forced to do so to obtain the lot. We accept unlimited bids which generally assures the bidder of obtaining that lot regardless of what the highest bid may be. Where the lot is bringing far more than we believe it is worth or in the event of two unlimited bidders on the same lot, we notify the unlimited bidders by phone or wire, if necessary, in order to obtain a fixed limit to the bid. Even tho auction purchases are sup- posed to be final, we do not want you to keep any lots which you believe are improperly described. We endeavor to treat our customers as we would wish to be treated. Coin collecting is a personal hobby which makes life a little more pleasant. We try to keep it on a friendly basis and value the many friends we have made thru the years. If you have any complaints, we want to hear them as well as any compliments.
YOUR SUCCESSFUL BIDS WILL INSURE YOUR RECEIVING SUCCESSIVE CATALOGS WITHOUT INTERRUPTION.
BARGAINS GALORE
In every sale, some lots go at "bargain prices." May we suggest that in addition to bidding on those lots you "'really want," you place nominal bids on those lots that "you might buy if they went at bargain prices." While you may not obtain many of these "bargain lots," yet in every sale you may pick up some real bargains.
Sincerely,
A. M. KAGIN and PAUL KAGIN

YOU MUST BE SATISFIED
Our Sales Are Cataloged With You in Mind. If you have any suggestions, complaints, compliments (yes we receive some now and then), ..we want to hear them. Having cataloged over two hundred twenty-five successful coin auctions, we believe we are qualified to advise and help you with your numismatic prob- lems. No, we don't "know-it-all" but we do know where to obtain the informa- tion we don't have.
We have a number of want lists on hand for the scarce and rare United States coins and currency. Our average commission for obtaining these speci- mens is only 1 0 per cent, therefore we believe we can pay the top price for your choice and scarce pieces, no matter how rare. Don't you think it is worth a 7c airmail stamp to find out what we would pay for your outstanding pieces? natural- ly we buy collections, too.

SOMETHING NEW HAS BEEN ADDED
We wish to call your attention to the new service extened as per the bottom of the bid Sheet. After receiving requests to apply the amount saved in the awarding of successful bids below the bids authorized we decided to avail this service to all of our clients. It is often exasperating to lose a lot by a few nickels when the amount saved on the successful bids would have been sufficient to in- crease the original bid to the point necessary to receive the lot. Check the bot- tom of your bid sheet.

Since the state seal appears on the reverse of each note, a collection of the various state seals would be more interesting. Some collectors prefer collecting all the notes issued from their own state. Either way, they both make interesting collections; and from the way they have been advancing, may even pay a cash dividend (in addition to the "fun" in assembling them).

FAMOUS "RACKETEER NOTE"
403 $5 New York F469 (Scarce) CHARTER NUMBER 1000 which
appears across the center reverse in large numerals "1000."
Gamblers and racketeers would put notes with this charter number around the outside of a roll of small denomination notes so that only the "1000" would show. Since the average * person never saw a $1000 note, it was not difficult to give the
illusion that it was one. National Bank of the Republic of New York, v.f . A MOST INTERESTING "STORY NOTE." Excellent for "writing-up" and display or giving talks (which the present owner did). $150.00 was paid for this note several years ago; it should now be worth closer to $ 250.00

LARGE "SAMPLE" VIGNETTE SHEETS
Issued by the various private bank note companies as "sample" vignettes which they carried in stock. Those banks (prior to 1863) which desired to issue notes, would contact these bank note companies and usually select a design containing one or more vignettes, thereby saving the cost of engraving an entirely new note. Therefore these vignettes (or portions thereof) appeared on many dif- frent bank notes. When the U.S. began issuing its own notes in 1861, they were produced by these private bank note companies. When the U.S. Bureau, Engraving & Printing finally took over the complete production of U.S. currency, they also took possession of the vignettes used on the U.S. notes. These "Sample" Vignette Sheets are now quite rare and seldom encountered. In fact, THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IN ALL OUR 235 SALES THAT WE HAVE HAD THE PRIVILEGE TO OFFER THEM! Should make a prize-winning display when properly written-up. 613 8x1 0^2 Inches, 18 beautifully engraved vignettes; at top in ink,

We note a marked rise in the values of these historical coins in the new catalog just released in June. Judging from the increased demand for these pop- ular coins during the past year, it was inevitable that the catalog reflect the dim- inishing supply. With the demand steadily increasing, we look for a further in-
crease in values in the next catalog coming out in June. 1961.

RECENT PROOF SETS
We note the rise in popularity of this series during the past year with many rising spectacularly in value. Judging from the sharp increase in demand by new and old collectors, present day prices should appear as "bargains" in the near future. As of April 30, the mint stopped taking orders for 1960 proof sets altho they normally take orders until the end of the year. They stated that they could produce only about 1,700,000 sets by the end of the year and that they already had orders exceeding this amount. We note in the ads that dealers are already asking over $5 (some $6) for the 1960 sets. A quick glance at the smaller amounts issued in former years will show that there just isn't enough of these "older" sets to go around and that they must inevitably rise in keeping with the
increasing demand.
797 — 1936 Brilliant Proof Set. ONLY 3837 ISSSUED. Catalogs 385.00
798 1937 Brilliant Proof Set. ONLY 5542 ISSUED. Greatly under- valued in keeping with its small issue. Catalogs 175.00
799 1938 Brilliant Proof Set. ONLY 8,045 ISSUED. The market is
already edging over the catalog of 70.00
800 1939 Brilliant Proof Set. ONLY 8,795 ISSUED. Catalogs 57.50
801 1940 Brilliant Proof Set. ONLY 11,246 ISSUED. Catalogs 47.50
802 1941 Brilliant Proof Set. ONLY 15,287 ISSUED. Catalogs 39.00
803 1942 (both 5c) Brilliant Proof set. ONLY 21,123 ISSUED. Cat. __ 37.50
804 1950 Brilliant Proof Set. ONLY 51,386 ISSUED (compare this with the 1,700,000 of this year to see how undervalued these earlier sets really are). Catalogs $55 but the market is already
edging over 60.00
805 1951 Brilliant Proof Set. ONLY 57,500 ISSUED. Catalogs $32.50
but the market is already over 35.00
806 1952 Brilliant Proof Set. ONLY 81,980 ISSUED. Catalogs $24
but the market is already edging over 27.00
807 1953 Brilliant Proof Set. Only 128,800 issued. Catalogs $12.50
but market seems to be edging over 15.00
808 1954 Brilliant Proof Set. Only 233,300 issued. Have seen a
great deal of activity on this year with ads of 15.00
809 1955 Brilliant Proof Set. Only 378,200 issued. Also a lot of
activity on this with ads of 12.50
810 1956 Brilliant Proof Set. Only 669,384 issued. Also a lot of
activity on this with ads of 8.50

RECENT PROOF SETS (Continued)
811 1957 Brilliant Proof Set. Since January, we have noted a sharp increase in demand of this year with available supplies disap- pearing from the market. Judging from the continuing strong demand, this date is “heading places." Ads of $5 to $6 which appear ridiculously low compared to the 1 960 at the same price which has such a much larger issue. When collectors (and in- vestors) wake up to this fact, this date should rise to its true proportionate value.
812 1958 Brilliant ProofSet. Only 875,652 issued (about half of the
1960 issue). Catalogs 10.00
813 1959 Brilliant Proof Set. 1,149,291 issued (about % of the 1960
issue). Catalogs $4.75 but the market now seems to be around $5.50 to 6.00
814 1960 Brilliant Proof Set. Have seen ads of $5 to $6.00; since
the $6 ads persist, there evidently are not many around at the $5 figure.
INVESTMENT LOTS PROOF SETS
Most of the investment minded seem to be centered on the 1950-1960 sets (someone is missing a good bet on the low issue earlier sets) as they are more easily available in quantity lots. So far, these later sets have shown the greatest percentage in rise in values with indications that the rise will continue unabated
for a while.

BUFFALO NICKELS UNCIRCULATED
We note the catalog at the beginning of the series has the following: “Well- struck uncirculated pieces have substantially higher values.” Those pieces in this collection which merit this premium are designated as GEM and are valued in keeping with their proportionate rarity. A GEM set of this series is indeed an
accomplishment. Very few such sets exist.

MERCURY DIMES
While the catalog shows additional premiums for choice and well-struck lc, 5c, 25c and 50c series, they do not as yet indicate the rarity of these dimes with a similar notation. Judging from the large number of requests we receive for GEMS, they are in relatively small ratio to ordinary uncirculated specimens. We believe this series is as deserving of the notation that choice and well-struck specimens have substantially higher values" as are the other series.

WASHINGTON QUARTERS
We note that the great majority of "uncirculated" specimens come with "mint n.cks and scratches." Check the average roll of "uncirculated" quarters and see how few are really gems. The following set was built over a period of years and are the best obtainable at the time. We imagine it would be even more difficult to assemble such a choice set today.

1635 1867 WITH RAYS, BRILLIANT PROOF. AN EXTREME
RARITY. SELDOM AVAILABLE AND ONE OF THE MOST RAPIDLY ADVANCING U.S. COINS. We can remember about 10 years ago when $150 would have purchased a specimen; at the present rate of rise in value, it will probably reach the $10,000.00 figure in a half dozen years or so. The last one we can recall changing hands was last year at $3,500.00. Judgfng from the increasing demand and ad- vancing value of other rarities, this GREAT RARITY should now bring between $4,500.00 and $5000.00

THREE-CENT SILVER PIECES
A little appreciated series until rather recently. Now with the increased de- mand, collectors have begun to realize just how scorce and rare most of these are. THE SMALLEST SIZE U.S. COIN ISSUED. For some reason, both the public and collectors did not take to this series which ceased issuance after 12 years (except for a limited issue of proofs for the few then extant collectors). Judging from the few specimens of some dates that appear on the market compared to the amount issued, we believe that many of the proofs were "spent." As a result, MANY ARE MUCH RARER THAN THE MINT FIGURES INDICATE.
1701 1855 BLUE PROOF. Either a hurriedly made proof or as a
leading authority states, "A carelessly made proof." Proofs prior to 1 858 were made to order" as orders were received from European collectors (usually the Royal Families or nobility) or museums (many of our choice early coins have come back from Europe the last 75 years). Occasional orders were also received from Congressmen and Cabinet members.
If the orders were received prior to the striking of a regular coinage, then the mint would oblige by polishing the dies and striking brilliant proofs (the degree of workmanship varied from coin to coin and year to year). Occasionally a choice specimen would be turned out but often they were not of the best quality. If an order were received later in the year, and time or expense did not permit, the mint would hurriedly polish a regular die and struck a "proof." As a result, many of the latter specimens would be struck from worn dies even tho having a proof surface (of varying degree of brilliancy and workmanship). This particular specimen doesn't quite have the degree of brilliancy as the later proofs. The last record we could find was the one sold at the Pittsburgh Con- vention in November, 1958 by auctioneer Kabealo of Cali- fornia at $1050.00. With the increase in values since then, we believe this specimen could now realize over $1250.00

1 736 1 794 VERY FINE, FAR SUPERIOR TO MOST OF THE WORN
AND DAMAGED SPECIMENS OF THIS DATE APPEARING ON THE MARKET IN RECENT YEARS. VERY RARE. THIS COIN HAS ADVANCED IN THE CATALOG FROM LAST YEAR'S $1900.00 TO THE PRESENT $3000.00 ATTESTING TO THE STRONG DEMAND AND POPULARITY OF THIS FIRST YEAR OF THE SILVER DOLLARS. SINCE THE PRE- SENT VALUES WERE COMPILED IN JANUARY AND FEB- RUARY OF THIS YEAR IN ORDER TO ALLOW TIME FOR THE TECHNICAL MATTERS ATTENDANT WITH THE PUBLICATION OF THE CATALOG IN JUNE, THIS VALUA- TION IS ALREADY OBSOLETE. JUDGING FROM THE NUM- BER OF WANT LISTS BEING RECEIVED FOR THIS RARITY,

1743 1797 16 STARS, 9x7 (TYPE III) TENNESSEE BECAME A
STATE, SMALL LETTERS, VERY FINE. THE RAREST SIL- VER LISTED IN THE CATALOG 1794-1803! Yes, it is about THREE TIMES AS RARE AS THE 1794! Until it is recognized for the EXTREMELY RARE coin it actually is, it will prob- ably not bring as much as the 1794 which catalogs $3,000. Here is a truly exceptional opportunity to acquire ONE OF , THE RAREST OF U.S. COINS (almost as rare as the 1838-0
50c, 1876-CC 20c, etc.) at a "reasonable" price before it is listed in the catalog at its true value of several thousand dollars!
1744 1797 9x7 Stars, Large Letters, very fine. THE SMALLEST
COINAGE OF ANY YEAR 1795-1803! Catalogs $200 but in keeping with its RARITY, should be listed at least 250.00
1745 1797 10x6 STARS (TYPE IV) Very Nearly Uncirculated.
VERY RARE. Coinage figures show this MAJOR VARIETY to be TWICE AT RARE AS THE 9x7 Stars variety. Certainly, a more realistic catalog value for unc. would be at least $ 750.00
1746 1798 13 STARS, SMALL EAGLE (TYPE V) extremely fine. VERY RARE. Only ONE SET OF DIES USED for this Major Variety (and then for only a very short period, possibly a month or
two). Easily worth over 300.00
1747 1798 15 STARS, SMALL EAGLE (similar to 1796) very fine.
We believe an unfinished die of 1796 (without the date) was hurriedly finished (date completed) in early 1798 due to the unsettled conditions of late 1797 and early 1798 at the mint) in order to fill an urgent order for coins, and the proper dies not being finished in time. A much undervalued MAJOR VAR- IETY seldom offered. Well worth over __ 250.00
1748 1798 LARGE HERALDIC EAGLE, 13 STARS OBVERSE & REV- ERSE (TYPE VI) Knob 9, ONLY 10 ARROWS, 2 "sticks" and 1 rather faint arrow, a choice extremely fine. A MAJOR VAR- IETY DESERVING OF LISTING IN THE CATALOG. VERY RARE. 350.00
1749 1798 Close date, 4 BERRIES IN BRANCH (ONLY THE ONE
DIE USED) UNCIRCULATED WITH RATHER PLEASING COLOR. RARE. A much underrated coin! 300.00
1750 1798 Close date, 5 Berries, 12 ARROWS (B-9) A LOVELY
UNCIRCULATED SPECIMEN WITH PLEASING COLOR. No doubt, the owner searched a long time to find such a CHOICE SPECIMEN OF THIS RARE VARIETY. The only record we could find of a nearly comparable specimen to appear on the market recent enough to have any significance pricewise, was where one sold at $395; with the price rise taking place since then, this RARITY should bring over $ 500.00

1799 OVER 98, REV WITH 13 STARS. It is interesting to note that THIS IS THE ONLY OVERDATE DIE LISTED IN THE CATALOG 1794-1803! Furthermore, IT IS 4 TO 5 TIMES AS RARE (depending whether 15 or 13 stars reverse) as the commoner varieties. Why the catalog persists in grossly un- dervaluing these two RARE MAJOR VARIETIES, we do not know. An extremely fine specimen which has a ridiculous value in the catalog for unc. of only
1756 1799 Irregular Date, 15-STAR REVERSE, fine obverse with
the reverse being closer to very fine. VERY RARE MAJOR VARIETY. In fact, EVEN MORE RARE THAN THE ABOVE VARIETY! Why the catalog assigns a ridiculous value of $75 v.f. to this very rare coin compared to $60 for varieties many, many times commoner, we have never been able to ascertain. Certainly, it should at the very least have a value of triple that of the "common" varieties or

1773 1801 12 ARROWS (B-2) acquired as UNCIRCULATED,
however we note some evidence of friction on the highest points (does have nice luster). RARE. A much undervalued date and Major Variety (deserves listing as much as 1800 12 arrows) particularly rn the higher states of preservation. OUTSTANDING PIECES SUCH AS THESE ARE IN "A CLASS BY THEMSELVES" AND DO NOT HAVE A KINSHIP, PRICEWISE, WITH THE USUAL UNCIRCULATED SPECIMENS. 1782 1836 Resembles the above but has the NORMAL REVERSE (TYPE VIII, this and the above). PROOF with attractive color.
IN GREAT DEMAND. Catalogs $750 but with the increasing demand by new collectors since these prices were compiled in January and February, the market now seems to be around $850; if the present strong demand continues (as it is doing)
it may well advance in the next catalog to near 1000.00

1841 Also acquired as a PROOF which it has the appearance of being; further, it is unusually free of the usuai minor ab- rasions which seem to plague this series. 1827 1873 BRILLIANT PROOF. LAST YEAR TYPE. RARE. Records
1828 1873-CC PROOFLIKE WITH ATTRACTIVE BLUISH GOL-
DEN COLOR. A MOST REMARKABLE SPECIMEN OF THIS VERY RARE DATE. IN THIS CONDITION, AN EXTREME RARITY. Since a large portion of these were melted at the mint and not released for circulation, the amount issued does not indicate its true rarity. Further, for some unknown reason, the majority of the few known specimens seem to be in good to fine condition. GREATLY UNDERVALUED, PARTICULAR- LY IN THE BETTER GRADES OF CONDITION. Ir this GEM were in our stock, we would price it in the neighborhood of $3000.00
