COINS AND MEDALS OF POLAND

The late Joseph F. Sawicki was well known and respected both here and abroad for his dedication to numismatics and love for Polish coins. He was born at Gorzno, Poland, and came to Cleveland, Ohio when he was 5 years old. He retired there six decades later as a Municipal Court judge.

Judge Sawicki started collecting coins seriously in the 1920’s and commenced corresponding with collectors and visiting dealers throughout the world. He recalled acting «as if there wouldn’t be any coins left as 1 rushed in to buy».

Since the day he became a serious collector, Judge Sawicki was a member of the American Numismatic Association, and he was a President of the Western Reserve Numismatic Association. The Polish-American and Polish Numismatic Association elected him as an Honorary President and he also belonged to various numismatic groups in Warsaw, Poland.

Offered here for sale is only the Polish part of Judge Sawicki’s collection. Although he paid special attention to the coins of his native country, Poland, his interest covered the entire world of numismatics, from ancient to modern times.

In his collecting, Judge Sawicki put the emphasis on type coins, and among them we find several major rarities. However, Judge Sawicki considered a selection of medals, not coins, as his greatest treasures: the complete set of silver medals of Polish Kings, presented to Lord Henry Brougham in 1814 (Lot 326), should excite the most demanding collectors.

In addition to the Sawicki collection we have received a small but important consignment of Polish gold coins, among them some ex- cessively rare multiple ducats of Sigismund III: 60 Ducats 1621, 5 Ducats 1614 and the Lithuanian 10 Ducats 1621. These coins certain- ly warrant being the highlights of the sale and they should attract considerable interest.

In 1702 a new series of Polish coins were struck at the mint of Leipzig under the supervision of Count von Beichlingen. On the above

listed talers he made the fatal mistake of putting the Danish Order of the Dannebrog, which he had been awarded himself, instead of the Danish Order of the Elephant, which the king had.

Excessively rare as a complete set UNC 7 000.00

This particular set was presented to Lord Henry Brougham of England in the year 1814.

Lord Henry Brougham was a famous barrister and parliamantarian, who pleaded very often in his speeches the cause of Poland.

This gift was given to him by the Poles in exile.

Henry Brougham wrote an anonymous pamphlet, An Appeal to the Allies and the English Nation on behalf of Poland. For the first time the British people were told about Polish affairs with real understanding and knowledge of the facts and of recent developments concerning Poland and her potential role in Europe. Not only in Britain was public opinion impressed.

Brougham published a review- of his pamphlet in the Edinburgh Review (January 1814), and a very outspoken one at that; neither Alexander nor the Russian authorities in Lithuania were spared. He exposed the «urgent reasons for a return of public principles and honor, more peculiarly in the case of Poland, » and he warned his readers, «Let our ears be spared the insulting titles of restorer, liberator, avenger, lavished upen or even claimed by those who, having got the upper hand by means of the peoples of Europe, use their power in perpetuating slavery and oppression and having driven out the French armies, think only of dividing the spoils among themselves, without ever wasting a thought upon the rigthful owners, to whose assistance they have affected to come. But, most of all, let os be spared the ridiculous name of pacificator, given to those who are destroying every chance of lasting tranquillity and employing a moment of unexampled success, never likely to recur, in laying the foundations of new wars; when they might , be recurr- ing to sound principles, only by keeping faith which they have vowed, reestablish the system of European independence upon an im- movable basis, and give to the world a real and lasting peace. ..»

The publication of the appeal proved a turning point in the attitude of British political circles, the press, and the Parliament on the Polish problem.
